Bulimia Uncovered

Bulimia nervosa also known as bulimia is commonly seen more in women than in men.  The onset of this particular eating disorder reveals itself as early as the teen years and as late as the mid twenties.  It occurs in women nine times more than it does in men.

Bulimia is characterized by a few different things.  The most widely known symptom is that of binging and purging.  One suffering from bulimia may restrict their food intake for a short amount of time. When the urge to binge becomes too intense they will generally go on an eating spree, shortly after they are done or even sometimes multiple times throughout their binge they will purge or throw up what they have eaten.  Self induced vomiting is the number one symptom of bulimia; dehydration comes soon after.

While there are two types of bulimia, the purging and non – purging they are both equally as dangerous.  The non – purging type has only accounted for approximately 7 percent of cases of bulimia.  There are a few antidepressant medications that have been used to treat bulimia.  Since this is also considered a mental disorder some form of therapy is often times recommended along with pharmaceutical treatment.
